We are excited to welcome new members to our lab!
How does your brain understand someone with a completely different accent? How do the people and languages in your social world shape the way you use and comprehend speech? These are the questions we tackle in the Speech, Sign, and Systems (S-cube) Lab in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Iowa.
Our work sits at the intersection of speech science, psycholinguistics, cognitive science, computational linguistics, and network science, and we use methods like eye tracking, EEG, computational modeling, and behavioral experiments to understand how the mind makes flexible communication possible.
Students in our lab:
- Help design and run studies with human participants
- Work hands-on with tools like eye tracking and EEG
- Pitch their own research questions and ideas
- Contribute to data collection, analysis, and ongoing projects
We’re looking for curious, motivated students excited about language and the mind. No prior research experience required. We especially welcome students who bring diverse linguistic and cultural perspectives to our work.
